Where Birth Becomes Ceremony | A Sacred Home Birth Journey - through the eyes of a Doula in Cyprus

Supporting Women to Birth in Their Full Power

A woman in a birthing pool holding her newborn baby, supported by her partner during a sacred home birth journey.

Entering the Sacred Space of Birth

I entered a room with a ceremonial-like atmosphere; a big pool in the middle of the living room, dim lights, rose petals… soft music.

Peace, calmness, water.

Their little four-year-old girl was sleeping on the carpet right next to the pool, undisturbed by the deep primal birth sounds of her mama. Having said that, I could see how even through her deep sleep, she was very attuned with her mama, as if she was very aware of what was going on. (How can these deeply innate sounds disturb someone anyway?)

Preparing your place to birth is not just about ticking off a list of ‘good things to have’ - YES, the sensory input is important in birth as it acts directly on the brain, which is responsible for producing the hormones of birth.

The feeling you have in the space is also important; inner and outer environment equally.

The Simplicity of Birth: Observing, Listening, Trusting

The birthing mama was deeply immersed in her process.

I immediately had a feeling that being in the water was somehow interfering with the process, slowing her down. I knew she was scared of something. She was reaching a threshold, an invitation for deeper surrender, for deeper let-go.

But I said nothing; I waited to gather more information about the ‘full picture’.

A few minutes later she needed to use the bathroom, but as soon as she was finished, she wanted to go back into the pool again.

The rose petals floating in the water were sticking to her beautiful birthing body as she was moving out of the pool.

I captured this picture with my eyes, thinking, “what a piece of art that was”, a mark of worship, and honour of the sacred process her body was going through.

Supporting the Threshold: From Fear to Surrender

In this timeless zone of birth, I could observe a clear pattern; in and out of the water.

The quiet peaceful atmosphere broke by a straight-to-the-point question:

“Am I doing this right? Shall I move somehow? Shall I stand?”

Something made her ask this question and I knew this was my invitation to talk to what I was picking up from the field since I arrived:

“If you get out of the water, it might be more intense… but it will be intense in a good way.”
“I am a little bit scared,” she said.“Let the waves melt you,” I said with a reassuring voice.

If I was to put a picture on these words, this would be: She is on a bridge; it’s dark and I am standing across, on the other end holding a torch. She has to cross this bridge on her own; it is her own initiation, yet I am there letting her know that she is safe, there is an end, and that she is capable of crossing this bridge!

Letting the waves melt whatever doesn’t stand on its own IS birth. The moment birth is not seen through the lens of fear, the only thing that remains is the woman facing herself.

Birth as Initiation: Meeting the Woman Within

She reached the place inside herself where she had a choice; to resist or surrender deeper than her fear.

And this brave mama was there! She made the CHOICE. She decided to transition to the new, upgraded, elevated version of herself - HER IN HER FULL POWER.

“I am ready,” she said at some point.I held her hand as she moved out of the water. She leaned on the kitchen counter and kept moving through her waves one by one.

“They are more intense now,” she said, “Now I feel that my body is…"
“They may feel more intense but these are the waves that are helping your body to open,” I said.
“I cannot do this,” she said.
“You are in transition,” I said. “This means that you are really close, my love.”

I remembered the same feeling in my own birth and many births before—that threshold which seems endless. I remember promising to myself that every time I see a woman being on this threshold I will let her know that she is almost there. (She later told me that knowing this gave her a surge of strength to keep going.)

The Sacred Home Birth Journey: crossing the invisible bridge

“I am ready for the water now,” she said. This time I knew she was getting in the water being a different woman; she was not using the water as a lifejacket because she was afraid of herself.

This is the REAL WORK OF BIRTH. When fear and the hypothetical danger of biological birth is out of the equation, the only thing that remains is the INITIATION.

It is the actual process that a woman's psyche, emotionality, history, DNA, and conditioning needs to go through to literally birth the new generation - stripped off from imprints that no longer serve the evolution of the human species.

A Calm Birth Remembered: Power, Simplicity, and Sacred Support

Every time I find myself in this kind of ‘simplicity of birth,’ I am in AWE of its beauty. Simple, powerful, and inevitably effortless. Effortless, not in terms of a woman going through her process, but rather because it’s stripped off from unnecessary procedures and protocols, most of which serve only to keep structures of fear and liability intact.

Every time I am a witness of such mystery in its purest form; the feeling of righteousness is enhanced in me. My whole heart and soul sing: “This is where you were meant to serve.”

At one point her mind started being active.

“My mind is messing around with me,” she said. “I cannot do this!”

It was so beautiful to witness her partner, knowing her very intimately, stepping in and helping her to stay in her body one wave at a time. I didn’t understand the words as he was speaking in German, but I could hear that his voice was like an anchor for her; he was guiding her in a very grounding, soft, yet reassuring way.

He jumped in the pool behind her and guided her weight to lean on him. She kept breathing, sounding, and listening to his voice.

At one point, without anything significantly changing in the scene, her soft voice broke the silence:

“Oh my goodness, I can feel his head,” she said, and invited her partner to touch the head too.

Seconds later, she whispered,“Look at this, do you see it? ”She had her baby’s face in her palms, slowly bringing him up to her chest. Novemeber 16th, 2025 around 4:52 am - he was here. he had eyes wide open, looking back at his mama as if meeting her again after a long journey!

I remembered clearly her wish and the visions of birth she received;

This beautiful mama and her newborn; the cord is fully white - delivered all the blood to the baby
“I want to have a CALM birth,” she kept saying during her pregnancy.

And here we were; no rush, nobody panicked, nobody stressed or made any unnecessary movements, nobody was SCARED.

The little guy didn’t cry at all. He rested on his mum’s chest as he was slowly transitioning earthside. It took him a few minutes to take a full breath and make some sounds, meeting his voice for the first time.

Birth’s Afterglow: Bliss, Oxytocin, and Gratitude

When she was ready, we supported her to get out of the pool and sit on the carpet, resting her back on the sofa. The little girl woke up to meet her brother. She looked straight into his eyes and her gaze looked like she was reaching his soul! The whole family was in full bliss and I felt the familiar to my body "high of birth" - being part of this constellation.

I had in mind that she would need to use the surge of oxytocin right after birth to birth the placenta, so at one point I guided her to focus on that and allow the placenta to come out.

Birthing the placenta physiologically and the intricate elements involved in this is a whole subject by itself, which I will probably write about at one point.

As I revisit this sacred home birth journey, I feel deeply grateful to be a witness and of service to such mystery. I learn a lot from every woman I support in her journey, and my heart is full of a bit more magic than before.

Creating a Ripple Effect Through Sacred Birth Work

Every woman deserves to birth this way. Every baby deserves to be born like this; gently, consciously, in power.

Even though I am dedicated to serve one birth at a time, this is beyond a single story. This is about a ripple effect. When one woman births in her full power, she remembers something ancient. And when she is witnessed in this way, the world shifts!

If your heart is stirred by this, stay tuned for my upcoming Birth Keeper & Doula Training in 2026 (in fact, feel free to message me and let me know how this lands with you)! This is for the women who feel the call to support birth as sacred, to hold space for other women’s power, and to protect the simplicity and depth of the birthing field.

If you are a woman preparing for birth or walking your own rite of passage, I warmly invite you to explore my offerings—or book a free discovery call to explore how we can work together.
